Combined BS/MS Degrees

A Bachelor of Science/Master of Science combined degree program is available for qualified Mechanical Engineering undergraduate students.  This allows students to complete a Master of Science degree in two or three semesters after completion of the Bachelor of Science degree.  A student in the combined program receives a B.S. degree when all requirements for that degree have been completed, and then becomes a regular M.S. level graduate student in the department.

Interested students should discuss the combined BS/MS Degree Program with their advisor during their 3rd year. Applications should be submitted during the second semester of their 3rd year, before the start of their 4th year.

Beginning Fall 2017 BS/MS program students are assessed undergraduate tuition and fees during their 4th year and are not eligible for graduate assistantships. During their 5th year students, will be assessed graduate tuition and fees and are eligible for graduate assistantships.  Financial support is generally arranged by the faculty advisor.

Beginning Fall 2018 The requirement to provide GRE scores as part of the graduate application process will be waived for all UI BS/MS applicants to our program.

Accepted students are expected to have a minimum UI cumulative GPA of 3.25, and maintain this throughout the program.  Undergraduate students whose UI cumulative GPA falls below this minimum will be removed from the BS/MS program.

Students may contact any faculty member in the ME department to inquire about participation in the BS/MS program, research opportunities, and financial support.

Please note that applying to the BS/MS program and applying to the Graduate College are 2 separate processes.  Once accepted into the combined BS/MS program by the ME department, then the student will need to complete the usual application process for graduate school.

Program Benefits

Students are admitted prior to the start of their 4th year and are allowed to:

1. Take up to 12 semester hours (s.h.) of graduate level coursework before completing the BS degree

2. Apply two courses (6 s.h.) towards both the BS and MS degree (courses numbered 3000 or higher)

  • ME students: courses that count towards both the B.S and M.S. must be taken as part of an Elective Focus Area (EFA) in an area related to the graduate degree objective

3. Attend the ME graduate seminar instead of the undergraduate professional seminar

4. Begin work on MS thesis research with a faculty advisor during the 4th year of undergraduate studies.  Please note that graduate research credits cannot be taken by undergraduate students.

**Please note that credit may only be applied to courses taken once admitted into the BS/MS program.  Credit may not be applied to courses taken prior to program admission.**
