Mechanical systems engineering concerns deformation and motion of solids in a wide variety of mechanical systems, as well as methodologies to optimize design of these systems in terms of strength, performance, and reliability. The graduate program in mechanical systems emphasizes fundamental principles and computational methodologies used to analyze and design mechanical systems. Areas of concentration include biomechanics, computational solid mechanics, laser materials processing, multiscale analysis, optimal design and sensitivity analysis, probabilistic mechanics and reliability, reliability-based design and optimization, and vehicle and multibody dynamics.


Thermal-Fluid Engineering


Thermal-fluid engineering is concerned with the transport of momentum, heat and chemical constituents in various types of fluids systems. The graduate program in thermal-fluid engineering emphasizes fundamental principles and techniques of solving problems in the various fields of fluid and thermal engineering. Computer use, both in mathematical modeling of flow phenomena and in acquisition and processing of experimental data, is emphasized. Areas of concentration include atmospheric and environmental flows, biofluid mechanics, fluid-structure interaction, free-surface flows, fuel cell modeling, materials processing, ship hydrodynamics, turbulent combustion, and vortex dynamics.
