Industrial Engineering Graduate Seminar—IE:5000 "Faster Stochastic Optimization in Machine Learning" Presented by Tianbao Yang Abstract: In recent years, the scale and dimensionality of data associated with machine learning applications have seen unprecedented growth, spurring the BIG DATA Research and Development. Many machine learning methods are formulated as an optimization problem, including support vector machine, deep neural networks, etc. How to solve the optimization problem efficiently remains a challenging problem for large-scale high-dimensional data. Recent research and development revolve around designing fast stochastic optimization algorithms for solving big data machine learning problems that rely on smoothness and strong convexity assumptions of the problem. In this talk, I will talk about our recent research on developing faster stochastic optimization algorithms without imposing strong assumptions about the problem. I will also talk about the application in deep learning and a new stochastic learning algorithm called evolutional dropout for deep learning.  Tianbao Yang is an assistant professor at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Iowa. He received his PhD in computer science from Michigan State University in 2012. His research interests lie at the crossroads of machine learning and big data optimization. He has focused on several research topics, including deep learning and large-scale optimization and their applications in big data analytics. He has published about 50 papers in prestigious machine learning conferences and journals. He has won the Best Student paper award at the 25th Conference on Learning Theory (COLT) in 2012. He is now leading two NSF projects about learning from large-scale and high-dimensional big data. Dr. Yang serves as (senior) program committee or reviewer for several conferences and journals, including AAAI, CIKM, IJCAI, NIPS and TKDD. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Tara Hoadley in advance at
