Undergraduate students at the University of Iowa can earn a Certificate in Naval Hydrodynamics by completing 18 semester hours of courses selected from a pool of courses focusing on fluid dynamics, experimental and numerical methods, and naval hydrodynamics. The learning objectives of the certificate are centered around a) providing students with a strong foundation in leadership, problem solving, and naval hydrodynamics, and b) developing knowledge of Navy science and technology challenges, and informing students of possible career paths in the Navy.
While this program would be helpful to students wishing to become commissioned officers in the U.S. Navy, the primary intent of the program is to provide students with a solid technical and leadership background that will help graduates to thrive in civilian careers in Navy science and technology positions, and in supporting industry. Because of the strong emphasis on fluid dynamics fundamentals, the program also provides effective preparation for work in a broad range of industries and applications not necessarily related to naval hydrodynamics.
The Certificate program in Naval Hydrodynamics is built around five learning objectives. The first three learning objectives are centered around providing students with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of fluid dynamics and associated methods for numerical modeling and experimental measurements. Specifically, students will achieve the following:
- Demonstrate a foundation in the fundamentals of fluid mechanics and relevant analytical, numerical and experimental approaches.
- Be able to apply advanced numerical methods and measurement techniques to solve-fluid flow problems related to naval hydrodynamics.
- Be able to develop creative and effective solutions to unfamiliar engineering problems, and to ask relevant questions that will allow them to continue to learn and exhibit leadership in advancing science and technology.
The final two learning objectives focus on understanding the challenges faced by the Navy and on helping students to identify related career paths:
- Recognize and address current challenges faced by the navy on hydrodynamics.
- Be able to make decisions about career paths in the Navy, its contractors and supporting industry.
To earn the Certificate in Naval Hydrodynamics, students must complete 18 S.H. of selected courses from the following categories:

A capstone project must also be completed. This must either be a naval hydrodynamics design project, or an independent investigation involving research or testing of a system related to naval hydrodynamics. For mechanical engineering students, the qualifying courses include those given in the table below. Note that both courses may be completed for credit toward the Naval Hydrodynamics Certificate.
